Introduction to PasswordPod
Remembering all the login details you have for various websites is a problem, so you might be tempted
to write them down somewhere or just try to use the same small set of passwords for every website.
However, recording important security details on paper is
rarely a good idea, due to the risk of loss or someone else finding them. Using the
same login details for different sites is not secure enough for important online banking websites and
just allowing your web browser to remember your login
details on your computer could allow other people to gain access to them.
PasswordPod allows you to store all your website login details and other private
information securely in one password-protected file. You can manually drag & drop details
to web pages and other documents and the program can also transfer details to
web page forms automatically. It offers a convenient and secure way of managing your details and
allows you to keep them organized.
Your data is kept as a collection of records, each of which has a unique name that you choose.
A record would typically contain all the data required for
a particular website, although you can store any information
you like in a record.
You can organize your records into whatever groups you like in a tree which is
shown in the main window.
PasswordPod keeps your information in a secure file on your computer that is always stored
in encrypted (scrambled) form using high security AES encryption. When you start PasswordPod for the
first time, you choose the name and location of the secure data file and choose a master password.
Whenever you add new data, it is encrypted before being written to the file. Each time you start
PasswordPod, you'll need to enter the master password to unlock the data in the file.
You can click on a button to transfer all the details from any web page to a record. When you next
visit the page with your browser, PasswordPod can automatically transfer the details from the
record to the page. You can keep the main window hidden when you don't need it and access the
program using its system tray icon - transfers to web pages will happen automatically as you surf.
Some websites ask you to enter only certain characters of your password. Even if you know your
password, it can take a while to work out which characters are being asked for. PasswordPod can help
here by automatically showing a popup whenever you visit the page which clearly numbers each character
of the password. If the fields on the web page allow it, you can just drag & drop the individual
characters to the fields whilst keeping the password itself hidden.
You can take all your passwords with you wherever you go. PasswordPod can be installed onto a USB
flash drive that you can plug into another computer and use as normal. The flash drive has its own copy
of your secure data file and a handy sync dialog helps you to keep the file up to date with the one
on your main computer.
